Ultrasound room at JVAICauses of Spider and Varicose Veins

When a vein becomes incompetent, gravity works to reverse the flow of venous blood towards the feet. Generally while one is walking or exercising, the blood flow is normal through the incompetent vein and blood is moved out of the leg. However, when one stands without exercising, the flow in the incompetent vein reverses and blood backfills the lower leg. This restricts venous drainage and results in high blood pressure of the surface veins of the leg. High blood pressure of the surface veins causes the veins to distend over time producing varicose veins. It also increases the pressure in the smaller veins causing these to stretch and become very prominent. When these are just under the skin, they are known as spider veins.

Spider Vein Treatment and Varicose Vein Treatment

We offer several laser technologies to treat spider veins based on your individual needs. Spider vein treatment may be accomplished with our new 940 nm Medipulse laser system or the Syneron Elos System. These cutting edge technologies erase spider veins right before the patient's eyes with very little discomfort. Sclerotherapy is utilized for larger varicose vein treatment when indicated. Large vein dysfunction is treated by actually introducing the laser system into the vein in a painless office procedure.

Endoluminal Ablation of the Saphenous Vein

This laser procedure is an alternative to classic vein stripping (the usual varicose vein treatment offered by most vein clinics). This laser procedure is done in the office and is relatively painless. A fiberoptic filament is inserted into the saphenous vein through a small needle puncture. It is connected to a laser that seals the vein closed from the inside. The procedure is quick, safe and effective. It is well tolerated with minimal recovery time.

Subfascial Endoscopic Perforator Surgery (SEPS procedure)

The SEPS procedure is designed to correct a specific abnormality of the veins deep in the leg that causes edema, skin changes and can lead to ulcer formation. The procedure is performed utilizing a small television camera system that is introduced into the leg in an outpatient surgery setting. Correction of this problem reduces leg swelling and significantly aids in the healing of chronic leg ulcers. Nationally, Dr. Joyce is one the most experienced surgeons in this operation.
